How lucky are you feeling today? That depends on your perspective. This infographic will explain it for you.
It was created by people who run an online casino. They want you to start thinking about how incredibly lucky you are. It’s understandable they would do that, because they’re in the business of people misunderstanding probability. That makes it easier for them to separate you from your money — you’re more likely to gamble more of it if you think you’re inherently lucky.
But the truth of it is, you are lucky.
Each one of us has done the equivalent of winning the Powerball lottery. Think of all the possibilities of all the human genes, and then start thinking about the odds of someone turning out exactly like you. We’re getting way beyond Powerball lottery territory here.
Reminds me of Richard Dawkins’ opening lines of his book Unweaving the Rainbow: “In the teeth of these stupefying odds, it is you and I in our ordinariness that are here. We privileged few who won the lottery of birth against all odds — how dare we whine at our inevitable return to that prior state from which the vast majority have never stirred?”
Enough of that ethereal stuff. Let’s get into the cold, hard numbers of the odds that you would actually happen to read this infographic, on this little website, on this lovely Labor Day morning:
